Amparo

A faded memory that I sometimes have is a memory of my first friend. A voiceless girl, she spoke with her hands. She and I were best friends. Her name was Amparo. She used to always wear this pretty red dress. Both our lives were already a mess. Wed find comfort in our distress.
She says the reason she couldn’t speak was cuz she threw her voice into the trees so the birds could sing just for me. I still think that was the sweetest thing.
Her father was a monster. He would beat her, he would touch her. I used to dream about his murder every night when I would sleep. Her mother would ignore her. Said if she could she would abort her. Shed turn a blind at these awful things because Amparo couldn’t speak.
One night I heard a sound. It came from the ground. It was her father. He started to scream. Went to the window so I could see. I saw Amparo. She laid there in her pretty red dress. She was bloody, her hair was a mess. He had beat her to death.
